If you are looking for genuine, authentic, exceptionally high quality Japanese food (particularly nigiri sushi and sashimi), this is your place if you are in the Costa Mesa area. If you prefer a more westernized/California-roll style sushi place where the rolls are drowned in sauces, this place will not be for you. Nothing wrong w/ this if it's your jam, but this should help manage expectations. Absolutely loved our dinner here where we had the nigiri sampler as well as a few rolls to share between friends. Sake selection is excellent and delicious. Servers were fantastic and the staff was so attentive even though they were understaffed. Cuts and presentation is absolutely perfect. Very simple hole-in-the-wall restaurant where the seating area is more simple, but you know they spend all of their effort on the quality of the food. Gives off the impression that everything is family-owned/operated, where their kid hangs out playing in the corner, so you know the food is absolutely on fire. Prices are a little bit on the expensive side, but this is the kind of place where I'd say you truly do get what you pay for, and I'll be returning here in the future 100%. There are plenty of restaurants in this strip-mall area, and this is absolutely worth a trip for dinner.

I've been enjoying sushi at Angotei for years, but today was my first visit to their new location. I think the parking is better than their old location for sure! When we walked in there were two parties at tables and no one at the sushi bar, so we opted for the sushi bar as usual. We're used to seeing Hero behind the bar or his cohort, but they were nowhere to be seen.... Uh oh! We sat down and were waited on very promptly. Miso soup was just as good as always. We ordered a soft shell crab cut roll, a Hawaiian roll and masago sushi - all with soy paper. Our sushi chef (Johan) did NOT disappoint!! The food and service were great and we'll be back soon! The only thing I would say they could work on is the atmosphere... I know it's a new location, but it's very stark white. I'd love if they created a little more of what the old location had, but still 5 stars!!

Had an awesome time at Angotei trying out their Omakase menu with my dad! Seriously, it was mind-blowing! The place had this cool mix of traditional and modern vibes that set the mood just right. We felt welcomed from the moment we stepped in. Now, let's talk about the food. Oh man, each dish was like a work of art! The sashimi was so fresh it practically melted in our mouths, and the nigiri was seasoned just perfectly. The chef really knows his stuff! What made it even better was the personal touch. The chef took the time to explain each dish, where the fish was from, etc., making it feel like we were part of the whole experience. The service was top-notch too. The staff were super accommodating without being in your face, which made the whole thing even more enjoyable. Overall, if you're up for a seriously awesome dining experience, Angotei's omakase is the place to be. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for great food and a great time!

We strolled in late after a show at Segerstrom. The staff was nice enough to take us at the sushi bar. We ordered a wide range of things, and had a great dinner. The fish quality here is pretty nice and the chefs really slice with care. Their tempura batter is a little more thick than I prefer and it was a little greasy, but it was our fault...they had turned off the burners so the oil was probably cooler when they started the fry. We learned that while this restaurant had only been open at this location for about 6 months, it had moved here nearby after bringing around for over a decade. It was a nice meal, and the hot tea was free flowing.

It's alright. It's a good 2nd choice when Hachi is full. Decent selection of food, authentic enough and fresh enough. Apparently it's been here for a while but I never noticed it until a few days ago, right after I was told by Hachi that there's a 1-1.5 hour wait. Nonetheless, the service here was reasonably quick, price-wise not terrible. Maybe I'm knit picking but the bright light and the vibe can be improved and that'll make it feel a lot more authentic... if that's what they want.

[Food] - Oyster Shooter: Yum! Amazing flavors amongst the oyster, ponzu sauce, tobiko, green onion, and quail egg! Most oyster shooters are usually a hit for me. I like that their oysters are a decent size compared to the other components. - Shishito Peppers: Sometimes when I order this some places don't give you a dipping sauce but I really like that they do here. A nice savory dashi sauce! - Chef's Choice: Fresh and decent depending on the piece. I could've done without the tamago as I feel like that was the one that kind of dragged the overall dish down. I enjoyed the variety of nigiri so I'm content! (: The sweet shrimp nigiri comes with the head fried. My favorite! - Nigiri: Salmon was average but the yellowtail was pretty good. Nice sweetness of the fish along with complimentary toppings [Service] - Fast, friendly, helpful [Ambiance] - From what I read they moved locations but just down the street. - Has indoor and bar seating. [Overall] - Would come back again to try their other dishes! - Food is fresh and delicious

I went to the old location and sadly didn't see Angotei was there anymore. As I drove into the next center to get dinner, I was pleasantly surprised to see they had moved. Yelp has not updated the new address nor has Apple Maps. I ordered a mixed plate of sush and drank a Suntory beer on draft and an Orion bottled beer from Okinawa. Wonderful to see great old school sushi chefs and lovely staff. Congratulations on the new move! New address is 3033 Bristol in CM. Sushi since 1982

Visited at their new location. Its a bit bigger, prettier, and they got new pretty plates (including sushi wood planks). Food even tasted better probably because of cleaner and newer kitchen and plates. It was about $100 pp and that said it was a really satisfying meal. $100 isnt cheap but their sushi is much better than other places at the similar price range. I was happy they came here. Also even happier that they got over the horrible covid period and their chefs came back with good sushi.
